Failed to connect to hosts in the cluster during SharePoint 2013 installation

While trying to install a 3-tier farm with SharePoint 2013 I got the ‘Failed to connect to hosts in the cluster’. If you take a minute to think about the error message it’s pretty easy to solve.

If you need an installation guide please use my SharePoint 2013 installation guide.

Problem

Here is the error message I got using PowerShell scripts:

Connect-SPConfigurationDatabase :
ErrorCode<ERRCAdmin040>:SubStatus<ES0001>:Failed to connect to hosts in the cluster

And here are more details using the SharePoint 2013 installation wizard:

Microsoft.ApplicationServer.Caching.DataCacheException: ErrorCode<ERRCAdmin040>:SubStatus<ES0001>:Failed to connect to hosts in the cluster

Failed to connect to hosts in the cluster during SharePoint 2013 installation

The error message really points to the solution but it’s not about SQL Server cluster as my first thought was (when hearing the word cluster).

Solution

If you have a SharePoint 2013 n-tier farm environment every SharePoint server has to be started.

And each server has to be reachable from the additional server where you want to install and configure SharePoint.
