SharePoint Template - Enterprise Search Center

This article describes the SharePoint 2010 Enterprise Search Center… a SharePoint template intended “[…] for delivering the search experience. The welcome page includes a search box with two tabs: one for general searches, and another for searches for information about people. You can add and customize tabs to focus on other search scopes or result types.”

You can find more descriptions of SharePoint templates at:

The enterprise search center template is available for

Here are some screenshots where you can see how the Enterprise Search Center looks:

A screenshot of the people results is missing and will be posted later since I didn’t setup the User Profile Service Application while writing this post.

Common tasks

If you need to do some common tasks as a site member or site owner please have a look at the following tasks including possible differences between SharePoint Foundation 2010 and SharePoint Server 2010:

SharePoint template functionality

The site has the following features activated:

  • SharePoint Server Enterprise Site Collection features
InfoPath Forms Services, Visio Services, Access Services, and Excel Services Application…
-> Needs to be activated to see the template when you create a new site.
  • SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure
Libraries, content types, master pages and page layouts and enables page scheduling and other publishing functionality...
-> Needs to be activated otherwise you get an error that a list is missing.
  • SharePoint Server Standard Site Collection features
    User profiles and search…

The enterprise search center comes with 2 lists:

  • Tabs in Search Pages
  • Tabs in Search Results

You can use these lists to create new tabs in your search center.

For more details please have a look at Configuring Enterprise Search in SharePoint 2010.

SharePoint template development

If you want to use a custom design you can use Deploying Branding Solutions for SharePoint 2010 Sites Using Sandboxed Solutions to brand your Enterprise Search Center.

Note: The search center uses the minimal.master instead of the v4.master so you have to adjust any other master page you are using: Converting a Custom SharePoint 2010 Master Page into a Search Center Master Page.

With the Enterprise Search Center comes a search experience which has more possibilities than the search center in Search Server 2010 because there are functionalities which are available because of My Sites or taxonomies.

It’s also possible to change the design of the enterprise search center if you consider the resources listed in the article.
