Getting started

SharePoint Template - Document Workspace

This article describes the SharePoint 2010 document workspace… a SharePoint template intended “[…] for colleagues to work together on a document. It provides a document library for storing the primary document and supporting files, a tasks list for assigning to-do items, and a links list for resources related to the document.”

You can find more descriptions of SharePoint templates at:

The document workspace site template is available for

Here are some screenshots where you can see how the document workspace looks like… In the second screenshot you see the libraries which are created during site creation:

Common tasks

If you need to do some common tasks as a site member or site owner please have a look at the following tasks including possible differences between SharePoint Foundation 2010 and SharePoint Server 2010:

SharePoint template functionality

The template comes with the following lists and libraries:

  • Customized Reports
  • Form Templates
  • Shared Documents
  • Announcements
  • Calendar
  • Links
  • Tasks
  • Team Discussion

The only use for this template is in my opinion the collaboration of different people (not teams) on one or  more bigger documents…

People work over a longer time, tasks are assigned to them and discussions are made.

SharePoint template development

If you want to use a custom design you can use Deploying Branding Solutions for SharePoint 2010 Sites Using Sandboxed Solutions to brand your document workspace.

The sandboxed solution can be used to change the masterpage and CSS of your site.

Summary

The document workspace can work for people working on bigger documents needing a platform where they can store their stuff, create announcements, assign tasks or verify the history of a document.

I don’t know how often they are used world wide…

Please take a look at another SharePoint template.
