If you need to do some common tasks as a site member or site owner please have a look at the following tasks including possible differences between SharePoint Foundation 2010 and SharePoint Server 2010:
SharePoint template functionality
As you can see the wiki feature which is a site feature changes the appearance and functionality of the team site.
Go to Site Actions > Site Settings and go to the Site Actions category and click Manage site features:
Here are some features of the wiki page:
- Wiki pages can be rated and categorized.
- You can extend the offered markup styles which can be found in the resource section of this article.
- You can’t extend the offered text layouts (source) of the out-of-the-box wiki page… what you can do is to create a custom wiki page with a different layout. Please take a look at the resources below how to do this.
- The text layout button is disabled if you use a publishing portal or enterprise wiki since these templates use the publishing infrastructure instead of the wiki infrastructure.
SharePoint template development
For a detailed technical description see the resource link for Anatomy of the Wiki Homepage Feature.
As a developer you can create a custom wiki page with a different layout shown in one of the resources below. See Provisioning a custom Wiki Page within a SharePoint 2010 Team Site.
If you want to use a custom design you can use Deploying Branding Solutions for SharePoint 2010 Sites Using Sandboxed Solutions to brand your team site.
The team site has been enhanced with the wiki feature in SharePoint 2010 compared to SharePoint 2007. Customizing a wiki page is possible but limited to the things mentioned above.
